A Calm Place in the Storm

My den was my favorite place to be in the house last year. It was an unusual Christmas as my Mother had fallen ill just before Thanksgiving. We had just started renovating our kitchen in October prior to her becoming very ill.
We had dishes stuffed in every room of the house while we were undergoing renovations, traveling to see Mom who lived 3 1/2 hours away. This space was a sanctuary during that time to come home to, and unlike the other rooms in the house that were being used for storage, this one helped me feel like it was still Christmas.
When Mom became gravely ill, the renovations of course came to a halt. I felt choas all around. We were losing our Mom, I was still trying to salvage “the magic of Christmas” for my 3 small children, and undergoing a full kitchen renovation.
I found this room to be so calming. I needed it to be very neutral and without many distractions so I could process all the emotions and heaviness. Mom passed away December 6th of that Christmas.
I was thankful for this space. A calm place in the storm to lighten the heaviness.
Thanks for giving me a place to share,
